The oral mucosa is one of the largest barrier immune organs in the human body. In constant contact with billions of microorganisms, food, toxins and potential pathogens, it has developed a sophisticated, multi-layered defense system.

Contrary to popular belief, oral immunity does not act by eliminating all microorganisms — it manages the balance: tolerates beneficial commensal microbiota, induces tolerance to food antigens, and responds with precision and speed against real pathogens.

Secretory IgA (sIgA) is the most abundant antibody in human saliva and acts as the primary immunological defense line of the oral mucosa. When Candida albicans begins to colonize the mouth, the body responds by increasing production of IgA specific against the fungus — plasma cells and plasmablasts actively migrate to the epithelium and submucosa at colonization foci.

The model disease of oral immunity

To understand how oral immunity works in practice — and what happens when it fails — there is no more instructive example than oral candidiasis.

Candida albicans is a fungus that naturally inhabits the mouth of 40–60% of healthy people as a harmless commensal. An intact oral immune system keeps it under control: IgA blocks its adhesion, neutrophils destroy invasive forms, and the Th17 axis reinforces the epithelial barrier. When this balance is disrupted — by immunodeficiency, antibiotics, xerostomia, or dentures — it transitions to invasive hyphae and causes disease: white or reddish patches on the mucosa, burning sensation, difficulty swallowing, and altered taste.

🔴 White or creamy patches on the tongue, cheeks, or palate that bleed when scraped
🔴 Persistent redness under a dental prosthesis or at the corner of the mouth

Diagnosis is clinical and treatment is with topical antifungals (nystatin) or systemic ones (fluconazole), according to severity. See a dentist or physician.

// THE PROJECT

The IMUNNO DEFENDER was born as an extension project for the Oral Immunology and Microbiology course in the Dentistry program at Universidade Estácio de Sá — Recreio Campus, under the supervision of Professor Rafaela Baesso.

Group 3's proposal was to thoroughly explore Oral Mucosal Immunity in its entirety — its physical barriers (epithelium, antimicrobial peptides), chemical barriers (saliva, secretory IgA) and biological barriers (microbiota), innate immunity (neutrophils, macrophages, dendritic cells), adaptive immunity (Th17 axis, local plasma cells), and homeostasis and tolerance mechanisms. To contextualize these mechanisms in a clinical and didactic way, the group used Oral Candidiasis as a model disease — a condition that precisely illustrates how each defense layer acts, and what happens clinically when one of them fails.

Throughout the process, the team identified that immunological content, despite being extremely relevant to clinical dentistry, is often perceived as dense and difficult to assimilate. The idea then arose to transform this knowledge into a digital educational platform — accessible, interactive and capable of reaching an audience far beyond the university environment: health students, at-risk patients, caregivers and the general public.

// VISUAL IDENTITY

The visual design of IMUNNO DEFENDER was a deliberate choice: the retro-futuristic 1980s style — dark palette in deep blue and black tones, monospaced typography, grid lines, neon glow effects and scanlines — was adopted to create an atmosphere of a high-tech scientific laboratory interface.

The decision stems from a pedagogical principle: the visual should reinforce the message. The terminal and scientific monitoring HUD aesthetic visually communicates that the player is operating a real immune system — with data, metrics and measurable biological responses. The contrast between the dark environment and the neon colors of immune cells (cyan for IgA, orange for neutrophils, purple for Th17, green for macrophages) is not decorative: it reflects the visual identity of each cell type and facilitates memorization through color association.

This style also differentiates the project from conventional educational apps, reinforcing its innovative and scientific character — and making it memorable for the target audience.
